(source)

i've been putting off writing this because my little brain keeps saying, "we're gonna blog tomorrow. pinky promise." and then something else comes up. more overtime at work. more packing. more this. more that. september has been one heck of a tough month so far. not bad tough. just busy and demanding tough. lots to do. so little time.

so, i am raising the white flag. september, you win buddy. my time is yours.

this will probably be my last post from this house. i will be blogging on location from my new place next time! eeps!

diary of soft, lustrous hair

about every month or so, i try to give my mane a bit of extra love. i figure, my face gets a good detoxifying mask or two a week, and my fingers and toes get weekly lovin' too, so why not treat these locks of plenty to a little r & r as well?

now, this gal's pockets are not quite deep enough for a day at the spa. although i wish. ;) what's a girl to do? it's called diy beauty care, ladies. i pulled together a few things from my cupboard, tidied up a bit (because who can relax amid a mess? i can't, that is for sure), set the a/c to a comfortable temperature, and allowed the silence of an empty house to set the tone. mellow tunes are usually right up my alley, but after the week's busy hustle and bustle, i was craving complete peace and quiet.

there are numerous diy hair masks that call for taking a bit of this and mixing it with a bit of that. i chose the simplest of ingredients. choose what suits your hair and your mood.

my hair tends to be dry at the ends and greasy near my scalp. the second is especially true after a few days without a washing. for this reason, i decided to treat my scalp and ends separately. i worked with the following two ingredients.

  • baking soda - aids in removing oil and build-up from styling products
  • coconut oil (at its liquid state) - its high fatty acid content nourishes and hydrates hair, as well as adds shine and softness
everyone has their own process. here is mine . . .

diy spa day - hair care

1. werk with whatcha got:
good golly all mighty do i have a mess of hair! hidden from view are the snarly tangles and rat nests.

2. smooth dem locks:
before doing anything to my hair, i like to start with a smooth, brushed coif.

3. gather your ingredients:
i mixed a few tablespoons of baking soda with just enough water until it became a paste. you'll want to give it a good stir to ensure every last bit of baking soda is saturated.

the coconut oil was already at its liquid state, so i simply spooned 2 tbs into a small bowl.

4. take it from the top:
to keep things as uncomplicated as possible, i always start with my scalp. using small heaps of the baking soda paste, i slowly worked it through every bit of my noggin. getting the hair at the sides of my head was a bit challenging. the paste began to dry quickly once it hit my hair's natural oils.

5. bring on the moisture:
next, i put my mane into a high pony tail, and starting from the ends, worked the coconut oil through the length of my hair.
confession: the coconut fragrance was 100% intoxicating and had me craving an almond joy by the time i was done. i can't even remember the last time i had or saw an almond joy! funny how smell is so intricately tied to memory.

6. work that updo:
i don't know about you, but i don't want my freshly masked hair floppin' around all oily and such. thank goodness for the bun.
to get the maximum benefits of the mask, it's recommended that you leave it in for at least an hour. i was in no rush, and kept it in for about two hours this time.

7. the waiting game:
not sure what to do while you wait? here's a few things i did for inspiration. ;)

have a snack.
find your zen.
practice flying.
still working on my bakasana.
better than yesterday,
not as good as i'll be tomorrow. :)

8. squeaky clean:
after waiting at least an hour, grab your rubber ducky and get ready to rub-a-dub-dub. you may need to shampoo more than once to get every last bit of the mask (especially the coconut oil) out of your hair.
i even took advantage of my freshly showered skin and applied a face mask. ;)

9. style as you like:
and last step . . . style your soft, freshly hydrated locks. this is the only step i neglected to take a picture of, so we will just pretend that i am not a dummy and that there is a picture below. ;)

hey punkin!

http://www.runningwithspoons.com/thinking-out-loud/

and think aloud i will . . . thanks to amanda over at running with spoons :)

1. this girl is still feeling out of sorts. i am 100% aware that i have been an irritable little monster lately . . . and yet i cannot help it. grouchy is simply my dominant mood. it isn't so much that i am unhappy, but that i am crotchety. a crotchety old hag. get off my lawn!!

(source)

2. this has been by far my favorite summer. while the thermometer is still hovering around 100°F, we haven't suffered through weeks and weeks of the sweltering teens. we have had more rainy, true monsoon season days than most summers.

(source)
funny how it's been stormy all week,
but of course when i screen shot the 7-day
it's nothing but sunny skies for days.
mother nature's humor is wack.

2.5. stormy days have always held a deep complexity for me. i absolutely, hands down L.O.V.E rainy days. the cloudier and gloomier, the better. they make me want to curl up tight in my afghan with a steaming mug and a good read, right next to the window. my, how my knees go weak over the smell of petrichor. on the flip side, rainy weather brings me down. mood wise that is. always has . . . poo.

3. the "cool" summer weather has be dreaming about fall already. my favorite season of them all. turning leaves. pumpkin everything. the beginning of the holiday season (in my mind at least). chunky sweaters. boots. jeans. layers. scarves. and the return of my shows!!

(source)
ha! pretty accurate during the fall show season

sigh . . . please come soon fall!

4. speaking of everything pumpkin . . . yes. #gimmealldempumpkins #heypunkin! #getinmabelly

(source)
i am certain THAT day will NEVER come!

5. guess who sat down with a lawyer to initiate the name change process? that'd be this girl right here! in just a couple of months (due to lengthy legal blah, blah procedures), my first name will be spelled correctly across all legal platforms, and i will officially be a konwent. <---- his last name :)

eeks! seems so far away right now, but i know it will fly by in no time!

five friday faves #12 - hello beauty!

hello weekend!

the sun is up. the weather is toasty. today is a good day to have a good day. i have been a bit out of sorts lately. starting the day with a positive mantra always helps put things back into perspective for me.

today (and by today, i mean yesterday when i began drafting this) i'd like to talk about beauty care. not a typical topic for me here, but taking care of my skin and feeling my best before walking out the door each day is essential. for me it falls under happy and healthy.

my "beauty routine" is pretty basic and mostly consistent throughout the year, but i do find that my skin favors certain products during the hot, dry summer months. okay, let's get to it. for today's five friday favorites, i bring you my
                                                   five
                            summer
                                        beauty
                                                 essentials!

1. the body shop: vitamin E cool BB cream.
during the year i turned 27, my skin did an abrupt 180. my T-zone was suddenly oilier than normal, while my cheeks remained predominately dry, and overall my skin became oddly sensitive. i struggled for a good year and a half with trying to find the right combination of skin products that would keep my dry skin hydrated without causing my oilier areas to break out. it was out of sheer desperation that i asked a Body Shop associate for skin care advice, while shopping their annual holiday sale one day. i was highly skeptical when she directed me over to their vitamin E line. the word hydrate was over abundant in the line's marketing, and at that point i thought for sure that hydrate was synonymous with break out city. truthfully, i bought it out of guilt because the lady had been so nice and helpful, and had reassured me that if it did not work i was free to return or exchange it within a month from purchase, with receipt.

if you haven't guessed, i did not return it. my first impression was pure surprise. i was surprised at how creamy and smooth it went on. no smudging or smearing, and it blended with my skin tone flawlessly. within a week, i was astonished at how my skin had not broken out. my skin was smooth, soft, and not the least bit overly oily. from then on, it has become a staple in my daily skin routine.

i love how light it feels. it absorbs completely, so i never have to worry about streaking or running, even in the summer heat or at the gym. perfect for an active, on-the-go gal! plus, it offers enough coverage to wear alone, but not so much that it feels heavy. nowadays i use my foundation as "spot coverage" when needed.

my step-mom has always been (and still is) a stickler about using sunscreen. she is very, very fair skinned and burns in a heartbeat, so in truth it is no surprise she avoids exposure and uses sunblock religiously. a true benefit because the habit was passed down. after washing my face each morning, i apply a quite generous amount of sunscreen to my face, ears, neck, and chest. i like this particular lotion because it is thin, non-oily, and specially formulated for beak-out-prone/sensitive skin. and it provides SPF 55 protection from the sun! it's perfect for day-to-day use and still provides enough protection when i am out hiking, running, biking, living life, etc . . .

one thing i think every active girl needs is a good dry shampoo. for the longevity and health of my hair, i do not wash it daily. it is wavy and a tad on the dry side, so it cannot handle daily shampooing. that is where this lovely product comes in. i initially tried a salon quality dry shampoo, but it left my hair feeling dingy and looking flaky. gross! i sat down one day and Googled top dry shampoos, and this Dove aerosol popped up. i have not switched brands since first buying it. it has a lovely, powdery-fresh scent, and does not leave my hair feeling heavy, thick, or looking flaky. a little spritz in between washes, or to tame sweaty locks after the gym, and i am out the door.

the one thing i cannot stand during the summer months is sweating. sweating at the gym i do not mind. sweating during bikram, no problem . . .  but breaking into a sweat as i walk from the parking lot into the store or the office is just miserable. and on top of that my skin is once again . . . super sensitive. i cannot use common deodorant brands because of an allergy to several metals and alloys. on the flip side, i have tried every natural deodorant i can get my hands on, and not a single one has kept me from perspiring, or left me feeling fresh by the end of the day. a few actually gave off a not-so-pleasant fragrant going on, and gave off an even worse smell after breaking a sweat.

i am not quite sure how i stumbled across this estée lauder roll on, but i have been using it for years. out of sheer miraculous coincidence, it does not irritate my skin like other anti-perspirants do. even better, it smells so good! record highs. intense sweat sesh. i still end the day feeling powder fresh, and cannot complain about that!

5. the body shop: vanilla body mist
i am not big on perfumes. once again . . . allergies. there is not much that doesn't bother my nose. still, i am a girl and like smelling pretty. vanilla is my signature scent. how very vanilla, right? lol. i have always loved its warm, cozy notes, and find that it is light enough to enjoy year round. this particular body mist is light and not at all overpowering. i spritz it on before leaving the house each day. it's the cherry on top of my daily ensemble.

new kids on the block:
while my sensitive skin and allergies limits the beauty products i can use, i still love testing new things out. these four are brand new to my collection, and i can't wait to share my thoughts about them with you, once i test them out. :)

1. the body shop: blue corn 3-in-1 deep cleansing scrub mask
2. neutrogena naturals: purifying facial cleanser
3. the body shop: travel size hand creams

thinking out loud: flashback

this isn't a true flashback. today we are going back in time to . . . yesterday! i began my crazy purge of thoughts, but didn't have a chance to finish. so for your reading enjoyment, i give you thinking out loud: flashback style.

***

1. i have been up with the roosters (if i had one, i imagine we'd be waking at the same time) all week, in an attempt to acclimate to my new schedule. it is nothing major. beginning on monday, i will be starting work one hour earlier, at 6:00 am instead of 7:00 am. that requires getting up at 4:30 am instead of 5:30 am. i used this week to ease into the change by setting my morning alarm back by half an hour. in truth, it hasn't flipped my world upside down. i am naturally an early riser. also, the change was self imposed. no reason for my body to try and fight it. the only aspect that is really giving me grief is adjusting my bed time. it has been so tough not reaching for my book to try and fit in a quick read. truth be told, i put off turning in early twice this week to satisfy my reader's thirst. so that is still a work in progress.

good meowning!

2. i received these two beauties in the mail on wednesday! chelsea from A Fit Little One has an Etsy shop, called Raw Mermaid, where she makes and sells lovely beaded bracelets. her jewelry is well made, and i adore the classic simplicity and go-with-anything style of her line. as you can see, these two lovelies quickly became my new favorite arm candy!

shop RawMermaid here.

3. packing and preparing the house for our move has taken up residence in my mind for the past couple of weeks. i have very mixed feelings about this move, which is strange coming from the girl who practically grew up a gypsy, and carried on the tradition of not staying in one place for too long into her adult life. this time around, i had really hoped to stay in one place for the next year and a half, while we save up for a down to buy our own home. i guess staying just isn't in the cards this time. c'est la vie and hakuna matata!

(source)

4. this weekend is forcing me to break out of the little hermit shell i've been in for the past couple of weeks. i suspect the oddly cool summer (and by cool i mean temps in the 90's and low 100's) and lingering monsoon rains have left me teetering on the gloomy side. for the past few weeks, i have intentionally and unintentionally been avoiding social engagements. not because i am angry with anyone. simply put, i have just wanted to be alone. while i know that me time is essential to my overall happiness, i have a history of letting my mental clouds drag me down. secluding myself is always how it begins. luckily for me (and unluckily for my noggin's cumulonimbus companions), our good friends  (the dude and i) are having an engagement party this saturday. i forget how, but i was roped into being on the planning committee a month ago, and with that comes the responsibility of being there for them. i am embarrassed to admit that part of me is not looking forward to it. i feel like a real jerk thinking it. the sunny side of myself however, is ready to be a good friend.

5. every time i think of next wednesday, i get a little nervous. august 20th begins my name change process! not only am i giving up my maiden name and taking the dude's last name, i am also correcting the spelling of my first name. have i ever mentioned that i have lived 28 years with a misspelled first name? i am sure many would say that it doesn't matter (what’s in a name? that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet), but in my case it does. the names on my birth certificate and SS card are spelled slightly differently, so i have never been able to get a passport. and this girl wants to spread her wings! okay, that may be a bit dramatic, but i would like the option to jet set to exotic locations on a whim. plus, i imagine it will be heaven to have my first name spelled the same across all legal document platforms. i can't wait! and yet, i am so nervous! i know that i won't be losing my identity, but giving up my last name and changing up the way i have spelled my first name my entire life is no minor deal to me.

6. my pain levels have been high all week, which means taking it easy. my body held up through a few very fluid vinyasa flow yoga practices, but cardio hasn't been an option. the pain coupled with fatigue has me feeling like a bit of a zombie. on top of that, my stomach in full rebellion. even safe foods have been upsetting my sensitive tum. rest. relax. recover. that is where i am shifting my focus.

how was your week?
what has your mental weather been like lately?

random is my middle name

happy monday! boy was i not ready for today. i had an extremely productive weekend. i cleaned the house from top to bottom, and have made quite a dent in what needs to get packed for the big move. btw . . . i can't believe we're moving again. and it's only been a year. *sigh* my, oh my has this past year f-l-o-w-n by . . . anyways, back on topic. my weekend was full of getting ish done. checking off to-do list items like a motha. felt a-ma-zing. and exhausting. the only downside to a get-er-done weekend is how much i don't feel like i had a second to relax. but, no bigs. we carry on. c'est la vie. :)

my mind is super random, so instead of attempting a "normal" blog post that has purpose, i am going to take this opportunity to purge all the little thoughts and tidbits rattling around inside my noggin. kind of like dumping out a handbag. let's see what shakes its way out.

on the brain . . .
books. books. and . . . more books! these five lovelies are the latest editions to my alex cross series by james patterson. swoon!
the ol' brain is still 100% on vacuum mode. anything my eyes see, my brain immediately wants to munch on. not a bad thing, eh? from new articles, to blog posts, to books, magazines . . . this brain must devour it all! eat all the books! haha.

this morning, i was greeted by a neatly wrapped little package that contained my pottery piece from my team outing a couple weeks back. a cute little elephant figurine. i have absolutely no clue what on earth i am going to do with it. truthfully, i would have preferred to paint a mug or dish (something i can actually get some use out of), but the selection of pottery pieces that fit within our team budget were minimal. oh well. i will find somewhere to put this little guy.

in my belly . . .
what a blast there was to be had, cooking up a storm in the kitchen yesterday. i made:
1. homemade pasta sauce, which i paired with fettuccine-style rice noodles.
2. from scratch "KIND" bars.
3. handmade turkey meatballs (a la skinny minnie). her recipe is for teriyaki meatballs, but i didn't make the accompanying sauce. instead, i added them to a sweet potato bisque (a la trader joe's) and created a bean-less, low FODMAP chilly sort of dish.
* i am lacking on food pics this time around (because my stomach rules me and has absolutely no respect for proper documentation), but will try to remember to sneak a few snap shots in before tucking into my meals tomorrow. oh, and i will post the accompanying recipe links as well. :)

i finally found something to fill my afternoon crunch craving! carrots. they offer both crunch and a slightly sweet taste (since they're just wee little bebes).

and no excuse needed here because chocolate . . . found these delightful treats while galavanting through cost plus. if you haven't been, you simply must! it's like someone threw trader joe's, pier one, home goods, and anthropology (think exotic soaps and trinkets) into one store. *sigh* my little shopper's heart just skipped a beat.

and pancakes . . . because i made these two weekends ago, and simply cannot wait to make them again. they are gluten-free, low FODMAP blueberry pancakes. to die for, i must say! oh, but i cannot take credit for them. this batch was a pre-mixed flour blend. i simply added the blueberries.

fit as a fiddle. healthy as a horse . . .
i have never once understood either of those idioms, but i digress. for your viewing pleasure (or not perhaps lol), sweaty pics of your truly. ;)
i don't usually wear glasses to the gym, but when i do . . . it's because i ran out of contacts. lame. must remember to order them.

current obsessions . . .
do you suffer from wild, unruly, 100% untamable hair? if your answer is no, then i hope to goodness you thank the big man upstairs for winning the gene-pool lottery. if however, your answer is yes . . . well then you, my friend, neeeeeeeed to own a wet brush. nope, this is not a dirty item. it is however, heaven for your hair. cuts this grizzly mane of mind like butta.

silliness . . .
because please, live a little.
this is how dexter helps me pack. i flipped the box over to tape the bottom up, and mr. slinks here shimmied his way under the flaps. what an adorable fool.

i promise i'm helping out, mom.

what have you been up to?
care to share any yummy eats?
do you have any current obsessions?

five friday faves #11

(source)

august is here! welcome. :)

there are officially only 23 days left until my 29th birthday! holy smokes, batman! didn't i just turn 28??? eeek! time to start birthday brainstorming. what to do. where to go. and all that jazz.

work has been ridiculously busy. i'm surprised my little digits aren't numb from the fast-and-furious typing i have done all week. and if that isn't enough, sleep seems to have been avoiding me lately. at least restful sleep that is. i could barely pop my contacts in the other morning because my peepers were so sore and sleepy. did i let the week's stress keep me away from my oh, so sacred sweat sessions? nope. this girl still made time for yoga and spin. *insert clapping hands emoji*

actually managed to remember to #selfie
once this week lol

but enough about my week . . . let's move on to my five friday favorites! i know, i know, it's been a while since my last, but they are sticking around. at least for now, although not as frequently as before. in fact, i am experimenting with a fff post every other week. gives me a little more room to play around with other types of posts since weekends are usually the only time i have to blog.

***

1. flower power

there is something so therapeutic about flowers, to me. no matter how my day went, coming home to a brilliant bouquet never ceases to make me smile. flowers always seem so happy to me. and happiness is contagious. this week, i chose a simple bouquet of vibrant golden-yellow daisy poms.

2. good vibrations

i have been positively obsessed with ingrid michaelson's newest single, "boys chase girls." i can't say for certain what it is about this song that makes me want to listen to it on repeat, but infinite repeat is exactly how this little lady has been enjoying it.

interestingly enough, she has been getting mostly positive feedback about the official music video. i hadn't seen it until recently, but love it. and i firmly stand behind her brilliant modern-day take on robert palmer's "simply irresistible." what are your thoughts? is her artistic restyling too much for even this day and age? or just right?

buzzfeed: ingrid michaelson’s new music video gender swaps an ’80s classic

youtube: girls chase boys music video

3. books

this girls has been on a bit of a book binge lately. my brain seems intent on devouring just about anything these little fingers can get a grasp of. currently, i am deep in the world of james patterson justice. a few others on my list for the year are:

a. the happiness project - gretchen rubin
b. wild - cheryl strayed
c. game of thrones - george r. r. martin (still toying around with the idea)

re-read:
d. miss peregrin's home for peculiar children - ransom riggs (so that i can follow it up with the sequal, hollow city, which i haven't read yet)
e. the narnia series - c. s. lewis
f. the harry potter series - j. k. rowlings (because it's HP and i am very much overdue for a re-read)
g. the bell jar - sylvia plath
h. brave new world - aldous huxley (one of my all-time favorites)
i. the giver - lois lowry (in time for the movie release)
j. where the heart is - billie letts

i just realized that most are books i've already read. no matter. a book is a book, is a book!

4. just for chuckles

because i mean, really . . . lol. can you imagine what the world would be like if we didn't grow out of that toddler phase?!

5. feel good words

(source)

because it is true.

sunny sunday

another sunday is upon.

another day to be thankful for the gift of life. :)

the dude and i are staying indoors today. best way to beat the 105F heat! he's studying (have i mentioned that he is taking a realty course?) and i have been putting around the house, keeping busy with little chores here and there. my usual getting-ready-for-the-week sunday stuff.

my list for the day:
- laundry
- create a menu for the week
- follow that up with a shopping list
- grocery shopping
- making a target stop (that could be dangerous)
- packing a box or two
- making a workout schedule for the week
- cooking and meal prepping for the week

do you have a sunday routine?

1 year!

my, my how time does fly! i am shocked and delighted to see happy, healthy, fit reach its 1 year birthday yesterday! shocked because it feels like i just sat down and wrote post #1 last week! and delighted because let's face it, i wasn't too sure how long i would keep it up. read: commitment issues . . . it may not seem like much to some. and i many not have a ton of traffic. and that is okay. i have created my little space in the mass that is the mysterious interwebs, and by george am i proud. :)

in celebration of turning 1 and it being national batman day i give you . . .

birthday batman

hey girl. hope you have a happy bloggy bday.
xoxo, batman

and then there's this haha!
work went all out and turned our cafe into
gotham city. there were masks, a raffle,
and even a photo booth. such fun :D

. . . and in other news, i went to the dentist again on monday. soooo exciting, right?! yes, this is my life. no shame haha. just the simple life of a cat lady in training. truth: i am a mere month away from being 29, and i still get the jitters going to the dentist.

bib in place and quaking as i await my turn
in the mouth invasion games :(

other than that, it's been work and gym time.

i enjoyed a soothing, muscle rejuvenating 30 minute, non-stop vinyasa flow. oh that kathryn budig. she is my yogi crush on yogaglo and IG.

tuesday: spin class for 1.
i rocked it! felt so good and empowered after
44 minutes of heart-pumping action!

i haven't been sleeping well the past several nights. couple that with a sudden hit to the portfolio at work that has been crazy, non-stop work for three days in a row now (and tomorrow will not be any different), and you get one pooped little lady. going to the gym was seriously the last thing i wanted to do after work. i forgot to wear contacts. misplaced all my hair ties somehow. and just felt allover blah, blah, blah . . . but you know what, i sucked it up and had a successful sweat sesh. another spin class for one. 40 minutes today. i didn't have the energy to go all out beast, so i maintained a steady hill climb and kept my heart rate in the 120s.

somedays you just have to take a deep breath,
banish all body, self judgement, and negative
thoughts with your exhale, and breath in
acceptance and love.

hope you are having a good week so far. we are just over the mid-week hump!

gone girl

holy moly. where on earth have i been? truth be told, my calendar is chock-full of special blogging time, but each time i sit down to unload my thoughts . . . nothing. absolutely not one thing comes out. feels very much like writer's constipation. or maybe constipation of the mind. what is a blogger girl to do? write. write. and write some more. obviously do as i say, not as i do. this is me trying. this is me giving into my own advice. it's not much, and that is okay. :)

since we're already more than half way through the month, i'd like to take some time to catch you up to all the stuff i've been up to since my last post. hope you enjoy!

on the road again! a road pic from our four day camping
trip with the dudes family, over the 4th of July weekend.
selfie with the cutest guy in camp ;)
what do you do when you are rained in while camping?
pull out the cards, tuck into a good read, and sip down a cold one.
homemade marshmallows that my MIL brought!
i was not a marshmallow person until these entered my life lol.
view from the car driving back home.

selfie from a couple weeks back. we went on what
i'm calling a "couples ride" with our friends.
it's been a while since i've ridden, so i was slightly nervous.
you know what they say though, "it's like riding a bike." ;)
we survived our first ride with the boys
aka the speed demons.
my first introduction to uncle ted.
let me tell you, mr nugent sure can rock the house!
movie night with our friends. a little planet of the apes action.
is it okay to say that i was mildly creeped out
by how real those CGI apes look?
i don't always take gym selfies, but when i do
i usually forget to post them haha.
am i the only one that gets annoyed when girls say,
"i don't sweat, i glow." uhmmmm i don't know about
you, but i sure as heck sweat my butt off. and sweat
through things, like my hat. gross, but case and point.
POV from the meadow during last saturday's hike :)

and look, i even made a teeny tiny little friend!
2 movies in a week?! whaaaaaat!
okay, so we almost never go to movies. no real
reason, but we're twice a year movie people, so
